Lukaku, a striker for Inter Milan, has only played twice since August due to a hamstring injury and is currently out for his team. Romelu Lukaku, an injured striker, and playmaker Eden Hazard are both part of Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez’s 26-man roster for the World Cup in Qatar.
Martinez had earlier said that Lukaku would compete in the tournament provided he could play in one of the team’s Group F matches against Canada, Morocco, or Croatia.
Medically, it is obvious that Lukaku is not fully fit, but the past 3 days have been excellent. Romelu will be given every opportunity to stay in shape, Martinez said to reporters on Thursday.
Hazard continues to be a talismanic figure for Belgium despite not playing frequently for Carlo Ancelloti’s team owing to injuries and a loss of form. Bryan Heynen, Alexis Saelemaekers, Dodi Lukebakio, and Jason Denayer are the 4 players Martinez has selected on a stand-by roster.
If necessary, Martinez may add them to the team up until the final 24 hours before Belgium’s opening match against Canada on November 23.
